Before the elections in 2012, Grover Norquist who founded Americans for Tax Reform, pressured 238 House members and 41 Senators to sign his Taxpayer Protection Pledge. Whether it was good or poor policy doesn't matter. What does matter is those members of Congress that made that pledge were pledging to a non-profit organization instead of to the People they represented.

 

They were also in violation of the U.S. Consitution Article I, Sec 8 Powers of Congress , where it states:

"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States"

By pledging to Mr Norquist and his non-profit, those signing the Pledge actually abdicated their Constitutional duty by surrendering their decision to a private group of individuals.

 

In 1994 House Speaker Gingrich got every non-incumbent Republican Senator and all but 2 of the  Republican House members to sign his 'Contract With America'. His contract is credited with being an integral part of the Republicans gaining both the Senate and the House that year.

'MY PLEDGE TO AMERICANS' doesn't force anyone to violate their oath to the U.S. Constitution. Instead, its forcing them to uphold and embrace the Constitution. And if Norquist and Gingrich can make such impacts with contracts, imagine what We the People can achieve.

 

If enough of us sign on and take some type of action - like 2- 3 million of us visit Wasington D.C. and camp out on the lawn in front of the Washington Monument -  enough candidates and elected officials will jump onto the moving train.
