Big Money Versus Us little People: Hmmmm…I Wonder Who Wins
An article by Open Secrets highlights just how much loss of local control Americans have in their local districts due to the influence of Big Money, as in Oligarch Rich Big Money. And it’s not just for the House of Representative races. The same is true for Senate races.
The 2024 election for saw just 17.6% of local money raised for all House races. The Republicans raised 18.1% locally and the Democrats raised 17.2% locally. The article also highlights that those candidates that had the most ‘outside’ money donated won more elections. With the ability to buy influence with their donations there is no reason whatsoever to think the money flow from the ultra-reich will slow down. So much for ‘local
House races’.
This is a key quote from the article:
‘The 2024 data confirms that national money is no longer just influencing congressional campaigns — it’s defining them. Across both chambers, candidates relied more than ever on donors outside their districts or states, with local fundraising hitting record lows. For many campaigns, national networks have become essential to staying competitive.
But while the numbers show where the money came from, they don’t tell us why — or whether that support translated into votes. Fundraising patterns can reflect strategy, visibility, ideology or necessity, but they don’t fully explain who wins and why. Still, the growing gap between where campaign money comes from and who it is meant to represent raises important questions about the future of accountability and grassroots politics in Congress.’
Rather than me summarize the whole article — how about you just click on this link and check it out. Takes just a couple minutes to skim through it.
There is a fix!!!! The only way to fix it is by ‘Sizing Up the House’. A dramatic increase in the number of Representatives will immediately diminish the influence of outside money and help give Americans control over their ‘local’ House elections.
Simply put — PROJECT 1305 is that fix. Check it out at project1305.org
